Think about a speech, song, or message that has inspired or motivated you. How did the speaker or writer use language to make an impact? Connect your experience to at least one rhetorical device you identified in Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Prompt Response: The song Eye of the Tiger is a song that really motivates me. This is because the hard beat and music just really get me going. The writer of the song uses repetition to highlight perseverance and never giving up. Dr. King also uses repetition in his speech to highlight his push towards change and equality. Both the song and speech show that repetition can be used to make a message more direct and stronger, as well as motivate people to move towards change.

Summary: Today in class, we filled out a planning worksheet, looked at a prompt, and dissected Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech" for the rhetorical analysis essay.

Reflection: I really liked what we did in class today. At first, I didn't really understand what the rhetorical analysis essay was or how to go about it, but now I have a much deeper understanding of it. I really like finding rhetorical devices in the speech because it helps me to understand how rhetorical devices are used in real-world speeches and readings.

Think about a time when you made a claim or gave an opinion, but someone asked you, “Why?” or “How do you know?” Describe the situation. What evidence did you use to support your point, and why is explaining your evidence just as important as providing it?

Think of a time when you or someone you know used informal language in a situation where formal language may have been more appropriate. What happened? Looking back, what could have been said differently, and what did the situation teach you about choosing your words carefully?

Describe something you will never fully understand.
